The Department of Secondary Education covers secondary programs in Grades 6-8, 7-8, and 9-12 schools.

The mission of The Department of Secondary Education is to ensure all secondary students receive a rigorous, appropriate, and challenging course of instruction. Our focus is to facilitate the classroom in providing great instruction, for every student, in every class, every day. Our expectation is that all students will graduate from Huntsville City Schools well prepared for college and/or the workforce.

Secondary Education Goals:

  • Support the implementation of the district's secondary programs and curriculum
  • Provide support to administrators, teachers, and other staff in developing and following recognized best practices.
  • Identify and provide opportunities for staff professional development
  • Monitor the implementation of the district's secondary programs through various accountability measures

Summer Learning Academy

Middle Grades Summer Learning Academy

We would like to announce this year’s HCS Middle Grades Summer Learning Academy.  Invitation letters to attend the Summer Learning Academy will be sent home to parents/guardians from their student’s home school. The Summer Learning Academy is a free four-week middle grades summer program that focuses on reading, English, mathematics, science, and social studies. Classes will be in session, Monday through Thursday from 8:00am – 12:30 pm starting June 6 through June 30, 2022, at various middle schools. The goal is that students who enroll in this summer program will maintain or improve their academic skills in the core academic areas. Breakfast and lunch will be provided.  Bus transportation will be provided; however, parents/guardians may transport their student.

High School Summer Learning Academy

We would like to invite students to participate in this year’s HCS High School Summer Learning Academy.  The Summer Learning Academy is a free four-week high school summer program that focuses on ACT (English, reading, writing, mathematics, and science) and enrichment activities. The goal is for SLA students to maintain or improve their academic skills in the core academic areas. Students who are currently in grades 9-11 and whose parents/guardians live in the Huntsville City Schools attendance area are eligible to attend this summer program. HCS is proud to offer six summer learning sites for high school students. Classes will be in session Monday through Thursday from 8:00am – 12:30 pm starting June 6 through June 30, 2022, at various high schools. Breakfast and lunch will be provided.

AP Summer Boot Camp

AP Summer Boot Camp

The AP Summer Boot Camp is a FREE learning experience from Mon. 07/12 – Fri. 07/16 that will prepare students for success in advanced courses. Students will learn organization, note-taking, and other content area skills in preparation for their AP course. Students will attend the camp daily during the morning session (8:30am – 11:30am) or afternoon session (12:30pm – 3:30pm). Both virtual and in-person camp options are available.
